Question :-

If 3/5 times a number is taken away from 16, the result is the number itself. What is the number?

Answer :-

Let the number be x.

According to the question :-

3/5 times a number i.e. 3/5 x is taken away from 16 means 3/5 x is subtracted from 16 then the result is the number itself i.e. the result is x.

Now let's form the equation :-

\sf 16 - \dfrac{3}{5} x = x

\sf x + \dfrac{3}{5}x = 16

\sf \dfrac{5x + 3x}{5} = 16

\sf \dfrac{8x}{5} = 16

\sf 8x = 16 \times 5

\sf 8x = 80

\sf x = \dfrac{80}{8}

\sf x = 10

So, Required number = 10

Verification :-

\sf 16 - \dfrac{3}{5} x = x

\sf = 16 - \frac{3}{\cancel5} \times \cancel{10}

\sf = 16 - 3 \times 2

\sf = 16 - 6

\sf = 10

LHS = RHS

Hence, verified.
