Biomass is used for facility heating, electric power generation, and combined heat and power. The term biomass encompasses a large variety of materials, including wood from various sources, agricultural residues, and animal and human waste.
Biomass can be converted into electric power through several methods. The most common is direct combustion of biomass material, such as agricultural waste or woody materials. Other options include gasification, pyrolysis, and anaerobic digestion. Gasification produces a synthesis gas with usable energy content by heating the biomass with less oxygen than needed for complete combustion. Pyrolysis yields bio-oil by rapidly heating the biomass in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic digestion produces a renewable natural gas when organic matter is decomposed by bacteria in the absence of oxygen.
Different methods work bet with different types of biomass. Typically, woody biomass such as wood chips, pellets, and sawdust are combusted or gasified to generate electricity. Corn stover and wheat straw residues are baled for combustion or converted into a gas using an anaerobic digester. Very wet wastes, like animal and human wastes, are converted into a medium-energy content gas in an anaerobic digester. In addition, most other types of biomass can be converted into bio-oil through pyrolysis, which can then be used in boilers and furnaces.
Heya!
The working of the given can be stated in the following way
Definition of Biomass: Biomass is plant or animal residue used for energy production, heat production, or in various industrial processes as raw material.
Biomass can prove to be useful for generating fuels (energy)
The given Biomass plant has various parts in it (as given) here is a brief description about the same :
Gobar collection: It is nothing but a place where gobar(biomass like cowdungs etc ) is collected. Usually the nearby farmer deposit these products to the gobar collector center of a biomass plant
Storage Barn: Barn is nothing but a farm structure which can be used for storing farming related materials like hay, straw, grains, etc. A storage Barn is nothing but a barn which is used for storing plants and animals products (even cowdungs)
Conveyer belt: It is a type of a belt used for transportation of goods from point to another point. Here the conveyer belt helps in transportation of the products like cowdungs, hay, etc from the storage Barn to the fermentation tank and thus reduces the manual labor required to do the same task.
Fermentation tank: Fermentation is a process where the breakdown of the substances occurs chemicals via bacteria, yeasts, etc. In the process some useful gases which can be treated as fuel also gets released (eg hydrogen, methane, etc) And even products of alcohol like ethanol and 2,3-butanediol etc can be obtained. Thus in short, fermentation tank is nothing but a tank where fermentation take place.
Anaerobic digestion space: The anaerobic means in less supply of oxygen (air), while the word digestion means breakdown of a complex substance into simple compounds and the space is nothing but a normal space where anaerobic digestion take place. Here the complex biomass gets broken down into simpler substances
Energy conversion space: Here the biomass obtained after undergoing fermentation and anaerobic digestion process, it is usually very simple by nature and hence it can easily be used as fuel I.e the biomass can be burnt to obtain thermal energy. The thermal energy obtained can again be converted to electrical energy by use of turbines with help of electromagnetic fluxes.
This energy obtained can then be transported for domestic and commercial use.
Hope it helps !! ^_^
