The picture of Mahatma Gandhi which we see on Indian currency notes today it came existence in 1996.

Before 1996, there was a picture of Ashoka Stambha in currency notes.

When the first 500 rupees note was used in 1987, watermarks of Gandhi's picture were used.

Finally, in 1996, the Reserve Bank of India decided to make this change and Gandhi's trademark picture was used in all the currencies that started from 5 to 2000 rupees.
