Acid rain and effects of acid rain:

  • Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction.
  • The liquid which is evaporated from chemical factories etc and then fall as rain.
  • In this rain the liquid evaporated is usually sulphuric acid and nitric acid , cause it is evaporated from the chemical factories.
  • Sulphuric and nitric acids are very harmful chemicals.
  • Do you know ? Due to acid rain the Taj Mahal colour is changed to yellowish green \sf .

Four preventive measures for air pollution:

  • Air pollution is usually done through vehicles as the smoke from the vehicles causes pollution in air.
  • Use eletric vehicles , instead of vehicles which produces smoke.
  • Make sure your kitchen is well ventilated so that when you cook , The grease can be evaporated.
  • Avoid burning leaves , trash , trees etc.
  • Air pollution should be prevented cause the smoke can effect our lungs.
  • We should control the gaseous pollutants like sulphuric acid and nitric acid.

Natural reasons/causes for water pollution:

  • These days water pollution is occurring due to floods , volcanoes etc.

reasons/causes for water pollution:

  • Burning of fossil fuels ( petrol and diesel ).
  • In rivers/oceans while they transport oil , oil spill occurs .
  • So, The bolts of the tank in which oil is being transported should be tight.

Acid Rain as the name suggests can be said to be the precipitation of acid in the form of rain in the simplest manner. When atmospheric pollutants like oxides of nitrogen and sulphur react with rainwater and come down with the rain, then this results in Acid Rain.
Acid Rain Definition
Acid rain is made up of highly acidic water droplets due to air emissions, most specifically the disproportionate levels of sulphur and nitrogen emitted by vehicles and manufacturing processes. Often called acid rain as this concept contains many types of acidic precipitation.

The acidic deposition takes place in two ways: wet, and dry. Wet deposition is any form of precipitation which removes acids from the atmosphere and places them on the surface of the earth. In the absence of precipitation, dry deposition of polluting particles and gases sticks to the ground through dust and smoke.

Air pollution is the introduction of pollutants, organic molecules, or other hazardous substances into earth’s atmosphere.
Sources:
a) Natural – forest fire, dust storms, and volcanic activity
b) Man-made – power plants, homes, industries, oil refineries, and transportation

Effects:

Causes allergies, diseases and even death to humans.
Causes birth defects in new-born babies.
Endangers animal health and welfare of plants and vegetation.

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies with harmful waste.
Causes:

Urbanization
Industries
Agriculture
Religious and Social Practices etc.

Not so Holy Ganga
Water Pollutants

The substances that pollute water are called water pollutants.
Examples: Detergents, chemicals dumped by hospitals, Insecticides and herbicides etc.
Effects of Water Pollution on the River Ganga

Towns and cities, through which the river flows, throw large quantities of garbage, untreated sewage, dead bodies, and many other harmful things, directly into the river.
Pollution in Ganga is choking the aquatic life and hindering the growth of plants.
Ganga is one of the ten most endangered rivers in the world.
Potable Water
Potable Water

Water, which is suitable for drinking is called potable water.
The potable water is free from all the contaminants and harmful bacteria.
The water, which is not potable or fit for drinking is called raw water.
Boiling Water

Boiling the water kills all the microbes.
It protects us from waterborne diseases.
Filtering Water

Filtration is the process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid.
Filtering water can take away all microbes and impurities up to a certain extent.
Chlorination

Chlorination is done by adding chlorine tablets or bleaching powder to the water.
This method is used to kill certain bacteria and other microbes in tap water.
