Root pressure is the transverse osmotic pressure within the cells of a root system that causes sap to rise through a plant stem to the leaves. Root pressure occurs in the xylem of some vascular plants when the soil moisture level is high either at night or when transpiration is low during the day.

ROOT PRESSURE THEORY -

This theory was given by Cristae and the term "Root Pressure" was given by Cramer.

According to this theory due to absorption of water a Pressure exerted upward i.e; Root Pressure, and due to root Pressure translocation of water takes place.

Objections of this theory -

✓ According to ringing experiment by Malphighi, root or root Pressure is not essential for ascent of sap.
✓ In root less number of plant ascent of sap reported.
✓ If experimentally observed that in a number of plants one to two atm Pressure reported which help in translocation.
✓ In gymnosperms root pressure is zero but ascent of sap reported.
✓ Maximum root pressure reported in morning mainly in spring or rainy season but highest root Pressure is reported in day time.
