The Chipko Movement - It was a non violent movement aimed at conservation of trees and forests from being destroyed. The name Chipko suggests that the villagers had hugged the trees in order to protect them from getting cut down by the contractors.

Khejrali Village - In this village, 363 villagers had sacrificed their lives in 1731 AD while protecting green khejrali trees which were considered as sacred by the community. It was a forebear of the Chipko Movement.

Arbari Forest range of Midnapore, West Bengal - A Forest Officer, AK Banerjee, involved the villagers for the protection of 1,272 badly degraded salforests. In return, the villagers were provided with employment opportunities in Silviculture and harvesting.
