Air pollution and smog have eclipsed the entire National Capital Region. The pollution level is way above the danger mark and has affected visibility, causing alarm among citizens. The alarming situation has caused people living there to complain of throat pain, headache, burning of eyes, among other things.
After Diwali celebrations thick smog wrapped the area leaving people gasping for fresh and pure air. The national Capital continued to suffer from “severe” air quality on Monday, though the smog cover thinned somewhat.
However, the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research showed that PM2.5 and PM10 breached the 500 mark in most locations on Monday afternoon as well.Particulate Matter less than 10 micrometres in diameter (PM10) is so small that it can get into lungs, likely causing serious health problems. Particulate Matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) is produced by burning fuels.
The situation has resulted in the state government to shut schools down for three days, hoping the situation will somewhat get under control till then. With the onset of winter and drop in temperature, smog seems to have intensified.
People have taken to social media to report the hazardous extent of the smog and have compared it to 1952 London Smog. A PTI report claimed that the 2016 Delhi Smog might be pretty close.
The haze has grabbed great attention on social media and people can’t stop posting pictures. Photos of historical monuments and architectural structures have gained more traction despite the selfie-clicking generation hardly finding a visible background.
