Given info : The volume of a rod after expansion is 5.5 cm³ , change in volume is 2.3 cm³ and the temperature from 30°C to 50°C.

To find : The coefficient of volume expansion is..

solution : using formula, ∆v = v₀γ∆T

where ∆v = volume change , v₀ = initial volume, γ is coefficient of volume expansion and ∆T change in temperature.

here, ∆v = 2.3 cm³

v₀ = 5.5 cm³ - 2.3 cm³ = 2.1 cm³

∆T = (50°C - 30°C) = 20°C

so, 2.3 cm³ = 2.1 cm³ × γ × 20°C

⇒γ = 2.3/(42) = 0.05476/°C ≈ 0.055/°C

Therefore the coefficient of volume expansion will be 0.055/°C approximately.
