NEW DELHI: Rashtrapati Bhavan will switch to LED lights by the end of this week, bringing down its electricity consumption through lights by 55%.
To achieve this, the Central Public Works Department, which undertook the lighting project, has replaced nearly 21,000 light fixtures inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan complex, containing not only the presidential offices and quarters, but also staff quarters, auditorium, bank, schools, street lights and public utilities housed within the sprawling campus.
Efforts to conserve electricity were started in 2016, when Pranab Mukherjee was in office. The effort to go green, which has since been taken up on a war footing under President Ram Nath Kovind, is expected to be complete in about 10 days.
Rashtrapati Bhavan has been making sustained efforts to become environment friendly and energy efficient. In 2018, for the first time, the offices of Rashtrapati Bhavan saw monogrammed glass bottles replace plastic ones.
