Radius of gyration is that perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation,if a point mass of same mass as that of the body is placed at that distance,it will have the same moment of inertia(I) as that of the body.
I =Mk²
where k is the perpendicular distance from axis.

the significance of this is that it makes our calculations easy by considering the finite object as point mass.
