This depends on what method you use to f arm. The conventional farmer will put on fertilizer and in some cases herbicides and then till the soil. They may also till the soil, put on the fertilizer and till it again.

The No-Till farmer will do nothing, but plant right into last years residue.

The strip-till farmer will either make strips in the fields and put on fertilizer withing the strips and then plant on the strips, or if he put in the strips and fertilizer in the fall, he’ll plant right into the strips.

The ridge_till farmer will plant right into the ridge and fertilize over the top, or if he fertilized in the fall into the ridges he’ll just plant into them in the spring.
