In India there is orographic rainfall because there is heavy rainfall on the windward slopes of the Western Ghats and scanty rainfall on leeward side.


Therefore, Mahabaleshwar which is on the western side receives more than 250 cm of rainfall whereas Pune on leeward side records less than 70 cms.

The Arabian Sea branch of the Southwest monsoon cause heavy rainfall on the windward slopes of the Western Ghat which obstruct the passage of the Wind.as the wind crossover the leeward slope of the rainfall is less.the Deccan Plateau receive very low rainfall and as it lies in the rain Shadow does the relief has great effect on distribution of the rainfall.
