Marco Polo (1254 to January 8, 1324) was a Venetian explorer known for the book The Travels of Marco Polo, which describes his voyage to and experiences in Asia. Polo traveled extensively with his family, journeying from Europe to Asia from 1271 to 1295 and remaining in China for 17 of those years. Around 1292, he left China, acting as consort along the way to a Mongol princess who was being sent to Persia.
According to Marco Polo's account of his travels, he traveled to India twice. The first time was in 1271, not long after he had left Europe to embark on his travels. He then went to Turkey and traveled east along the Silk Road until he reached China, likely around 1275. He spent nearly two decades in China before returning home to Venice. On his return journey, he again stopped in India, reaching the country in 1292. He had spent nearly twenty years in China and on his return journey, arrived in a merchant ship at Maabar, which is a port in Tamlindu. He spoke of the exotic religions and foods that he found in India and many of his European readers later thought he was exaggerating. In any case, his eye-witness account shows a thriving India with all of its diversity and complexity.
