The cost price of article is 800 rupees.

Step-by-step explanation:

According to problem

If he had sold for 760 rupees he would lose 5% of cost price

let cost price of article be x

therefore 760 + 5%x = x

or 760 + 5x/100 = x

or 760 + 0.05x = x -----> 1

similarly,

if he had sold it for 840 rupees he would gain 5% of cost price.

thus,

840 - 5%x = x

or 840 - 5x/100 = x

or 840 - 0.05x = x ----> 2

from ----> 1 & ----> 2 we get ,

760 + 0.05x = 840 - 0.05x

or 0.05x + 0.05x = 840 - 760

or 0.1x = 80

or x = 80/0.1

or x = 800

Therefore cost price of article is 800 rupees.
