When Ralph was looking at the blood vessel as a part of his study he has noticed that the blood vessel contains valves the blood vessel which he was observing was veins.

The veins carry ‘deoxygenated blood’ from the organs to the heart. This contains valves to maintain the flow in one direction.

On the contrary the ‘arteries’ do not need valves due to their internal pressure which they experience because of the pumping of the heart.
