Answer:

Force is said to be the rate of change of linear momentum.

Explanation:

  • The product of the mass and the velocity of a body is known as momentum.
  • It is also a vector quantity.
  • According to newton's second law of motion, a force that is not balanced when applied to a body, then it is known to be directly proportional to the rate of change of momentum.

                   Rate of change of momentum = \frac{mv-mu}{t}

where,

mv = final momentum

mu = initial momentum

And according to the above statement,

                             F=k(\frac{mv-mu}{t})

where,

k = proportionality constant = 1

                           F= m(\frac{v-u}{t} )

we know that,

                      \frac{v-u}{t} = acceleration\\

                           ∴    F = ma                        (a = acceleration)

Hence we can conclude that the rate of change of momentum is the same as the force applied to an object.
