Given - Rate of diffusion of X in comparison to helium

Find - Molecular weight of gas X.

Solution - According to Graham's Law of diffusion, rate of diffusion of gas is inversely proportional to square root of molecular weight of the gas. Mathematically it will be represented as -

R1/R2 =√(M2/M1)

Molecular weight of Helium is 4 g/mol.

Keeping the values in equation-

X/4X = √(4/M1)

(1/4)² = 4/M1

M1 = 4*16

M1 = 64 g/mol.

Hence, molecular weight of gas X is 64 g/mol.
