Razia Sultan ruled from 1236 to 1240 after which she was dethroned as the nobility could not accept being ruled by a woman. She was an able administrator and was the first woman ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. Her rule was characterised by efficient law and order and she was said to have been very devoted to her subjects.

Razia Sultana was the first and only woman in the medieval history to sat on the throne.She belonged to the slave dynasty, she was the daughter of Shamas uddin Iltutmish. During the last days of Iltutmish, he nominated Razia as the next ruler of Delhi, as he thought ,she was more capable than any of his sons. She was a brave and a fearless woman. She was assassinated by his half brother Bahram Shah in the year 1240.She ruled only for 4 years, 1236–1240,yet history always remembers her.
