So, SO4- reacts with iron, resulting in FeSO4. Iron sulfate is soluble in water, so the reaction will be keeping occur and the iron will being suffered corrosion. Notice that pure sulphuric acid can't completely corrossion the iron. Since FeSO4 will stay at the surface of the metal, protecting it from more damage.
