Barium chloride (BaCl2) will not react with HCl since both have the same anion Cl- hence no reaction. However in case of H2SO4, a white ppt of BaSO4 may be seen. Barium chloride reacts with sulfuric acid, to form an insoluble white precipitate of barium sulfate .

Reaction of barium chloride solution with hydrochloric acid

Explanation:

  • Barium chloride does not react with hydrochloric acid, since both possess the same negative radical (Cl-).
  • Barium chloride is composed of a metal, barium, and a non-metal, chlorine, and will therefore most likely bond by ionic bonding. In this case, barium is located in group 2 of the periodic table, and will contain an oxidation number of +2 , while chlorine, located in group 7 , will contain an oxidation number of −1 .
  • It is commonly used as a test for sulfate ion. In industry, Barium Chloride is mainly used in the purification of brine solution in caustic chlorine plants and also in the manufacture of heat treatment salts, case hardening of steel, in the manufacture of pigments, and in the manufacture of other barium salts.
