Most reactive metals like Sodim and potassium the react with oxygen as soon as they come in contact of air. Other react when they are burnt i.e., during their combustion they reacts with oxygen to form their metallic oxide which is basic in nature. Like Magnesium (in ribbons) are burnt in air to form MgO

2Mg+O2--->2Mgo
