The product of of the reaction in each case are a metal hydroxide ( forming an alkaline solution) and hydrogen gas . magnesium required water to be form of steam for a clearly observable reaction to take place. the metal is less reactive than potassium , sodium, lithium and calcium .
metal + water => metal hydroxide + hydroxide
