Hydrogen gas is not evolved when a metalreacts with nitric acid because nitric acid isa strong oxidising agent.it oxidises with thehydrogen produced to forn water and thenitric acid itself gets reduced to any of nitrogen oxide(N2O,NO,NO2). but Mg reacts with nitric acid to form hydrogen gas.
