Read the excerpt from Part 1 of The Odyssey. And this new grief we bore with us to sea: our precious lives we had, but not our friends. No ship made sail next day until some shipmate had raised a cry, three times, for each poor ghost unfleshed by the Cicones on that field. What theme is best revealed by this conflict? Sadness can destroy people. One must mourn before moving on. Many lives are lost too soon in battle. People are haunted by lost souls.

The theme which is best revealed by the above conflict is that:

One must mourn before moving on.

Odysseus tells about his men that they ate up all the sheep and drank the wine until their stomach was full. After they were full, the Cicones' army attacked them which was a consequence of the butcher nature of his men. Though Odysseus and his men escaped from the land six men from every ship went missing. After escaping he felt sad for the men who lost their lives in the land of Cicones and mourned for them.
