Read the following information and answer the question given below it.

If ranks of five candidates P, Q, R, S and T are arranged in ascending order in Numerical Ability, T is the fourth and S is the first. When they are arranged in the ascending order of marks in General Awareness, P takes the place of T and T takes the place of Q. R’s position remains the same in both the arrangements. Q’s marks are lowest in one test and highest in the other test. P has less marks than R in Numerical Ability.

Who has secured the highest marks in Numerical Ability?

(1) S
(2) R
(3) P
(4) Q
(5) T

Answer

Q

\rule{50}2

Explanation

Case - 1

Marks are arranged in ascending order in numerical ability.

→ Lowest mark is put first.

Now, since S is put first here, S would have the least marks. Since, there are 5 candidates and T secured fourth here, T would be 2nd highest in numerical ability.

Case - 2

Arranged in ascending order of general awareness.

Now, P takes the place of T. Hence, P is second highest in general awareness. T takes the place of Q, which is yet unknown.

→ R's position remains the same.

→ P has less marks than R in numerical ability.

→ Q's marks are lowest in one test and highest in other.

Here, we know that T is second highest in numerical ability, S is last and P has less marks than R. Hence, the highest mark is either of R or Q.

Now, if R is highest, then since it is said that R's position remains the same in both, then R would score highest in both test BUT it then contradicts that Q has scored highest in one test.

Therefore, R is also not the highest scorer.

Hence, Q will be the highest scorer in numerical ability since it is the only person left.

Step-by-step explanation:

That means Q got least marks in Numerical ability and S got the highest.

In General Awareness T got the least marks and Q got the highest.

Ranks of five candidates P, Q, R, S and T are arranged in ascending order of their marks.

That means candidate with highest marks have highest rank.

In Numerical Ability, T is the fourth and S is the first.

In General Awareness, P takes the place of T and T takes the place of Q. R’s position remains the same in both the arrangements.

Let place of Q and R in Numerical ability are ‘n’ and ‘x’ respectively.

n

Q’s marks are lowest in one test and highest in the other test.

As in Numerical ability rank of S is first so Q cannot be first. Hence Q is last in Numerical ability and first in General awareness.

P has more less than R in Numerical Ability.

Hence P is third and R is second in Numerical ability.

R = Rank

Numerical Ability R General Awareness R

Candidate

P. 3 4

Q. 5 1.

R 2 2

S 1. 3

T 4 5

Hence we get the final table.

So the ranks in ascending order are as follows,

Numerical Ability: S R P T Q

General Awareness: Q R S P T

So, Q secured the highest marks in Numerical Ability
