Built in 1599, The Globe was the first theatre to be built and funded

by an existing acting company, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men. Actor

Richard Burbage and his brother contributed half of the cost, while the

other four members, including William Shakespeare contributed 12.5

percent each.

The Globe was built using the skeleton of an older play house

called the Theatre. Like a Roman amphitheatre, it was designed in a

circular pattern. There is also the opinion that its shape reflected the

gathering of crowds around actors in town marketplaces. The Globe had

three levels of galleries surrounding yard. Seats wear arranged stadium-

style. People who could not afford a seat, stood in the yard, earning

themselves the name ‘standlings’. At full capacity, it held 3000 people.

The stage had many features built into it that allowed actors to

make dramatic entrances and exits as their roles demanded .Curtained

doors on the main stage levels led to ‘tiring houses' where the cast

members changed costumes and waited between scenes.

The ‘Wooden O’, as it was sometimes called, proved to be a good

investment. It quickly became popular as Shakespeare’s Globe. But it all

did not end well. A canon misfired during a performance in 1613 and in

less than two hours, The Globe burned down.
