They control floods in the rivers. When there are floods, the gates of the dams are opened and the water flows down the river and the canals. The water does not overflow the banks and the people in the village and town near by do not have to be afraid of floods. The dams also do other important things, they make electricity. The water in the dam falls on giant wheels and turns them. The wheels turn machines which produce electric current.
