The Dewali is the festival of lights. Every year a lot of money is spent for the celebration of this festival. The Marwaris of Calcutta decorate their houses with innumerable lights. They spend a lot of money on the night of the
Dewali. The festival held on the night of the amabasya or the New Moon after the Durga
Puja. A Dewali night looks very charming. The lights from the houses make the streets well-
lighted. People are out at night to see and enjoy the lights. When the fireworks are displayed, the town presents a grand spectacle. On this
occasion the Marwaris, Gujaratis and others send presents of sweets and fireworks to their friends and relatives. There is no such custom with the Bengalees. But every Bengalee house
is also lighted on that night. In Calcutta competitions of the display of fireworks are often held. Sometimes accidents occur when there is display of firework. Many people are wounded. Sometimes death occurs. There are out-breaks of fire in Calcutta. The fire brigade has a very busy time.​
