Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :
Dhanai was about to turn over and go back to sleep when he heard strange sounds .He sat up , the sleep had gone from his eyes . He listened intently .The low muted sounds were now clear and loud sounds of trumpets and squeals , the rustling of grass and creaking of bamboo. Shaking his father awake , he said urgently , “Wild elephants! There’s a herd close by . Listen carefully , Father!” His father gestured to him to be quiet and listen . Yes ! An elephant herd was grazing somewhere close to the village . Unless driven away, they might stray into the paddy fields and destroy the crops . Wrapping a shawl around himself , Dhanai’s father hurried out of the hut . He cupped his palms around his mouth , and shouted into the night . “Wild elephants , wake up everyone!” Then accompanied by his son , he returned to the house and picked up two kerosene flares. Being in the precincts of a wildlife sanctuary , the villagers were always prepared for any eventuality such as this. The village suddenly came alive . Dhanai’s father lighted the flares ,thrust one into Dhanai’s hand and ran out into the night. For a while , Dhanai followed his father, but he broke away on reaching the banyan tree . He had to wait only a few minutes when two shadowy figures rushed to the same spot , Babul and Jonti . “To the field!” shouted Dhanai ,”Hurry!” As they broke into a run , they heard more shouts and instructions . Men were rushing about in all directions . The boys saw a platform on a tree, climbed on it and waved the flares . Jonti beat the tin can with all his might .All around flares lit up the darkness. Then , they saw the herd , incredibly close . A group of villagers , armed with flares, approached the huge mammals. The noise of the tin cans and drums grew louder. The leader of the herd trumpeted nervously at the approaching flares but held her ground . A large patch of succulent sugarcane was nearby , and the beasts wanted to get at it . It was a volatile situation ; the headman had a shotgun in his hand . He issued a command , and a villager put a torch to a string of firecrackers that he had carried for just such an emergency . At the same moment , the headman raised his gun and fired two blank shots into the air . The noise of the shots , and the exploding crackers frightened the herd . The leader uttered a terrified whinny and whirled around calling upon the others to flee . They thundered away towards the safety of the sanctuary.
