Read the following passage carefully:

Sherlock Holmes is a famous fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock

Holmes is portrayed as a brilliant London-based consulting detective, famous for his astute

logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science skills

to solve difficult cases. Holmes first appeared in publication in 1887. He was featured in four

novels and 56 short stories. The first novel, A Study in Scarler, appeared in Berton's

Christmas Annual in 1887. Holmes is always assisted by his friend Watson. Almost all the

stories are unravelled through the narrative of Dr Watson. 221B Baker Street is the address at

which both of them lived, which later became a world-famous one.

When Doyle decided to put an end to the Sherlock Holmes series, he made him die in the

short story The Adventure of the Final Problem. But after that, the dichard fans of Sherlock

Holmes began to write numerous letters to the address of Holmes and Watson saying that they

didn't want to see him die. So Doyle was forced to contrive a dramatic reappearance of

Holmes in the short story "The Adventure of the Empty House. It is believed that the character

of Holmes resembles in many ways Dr Joseph Bell, one of the teachers of Dovie at the

medical school of Edinburgh Univeraty. The detective stories of Sherlock Holmes have been

made into many movies and plays. In terms of fame, Holmes outdid his creator in a big way.
