Read the following passage.
From the nasal cavity, the air goes into the pharynx. There is a tricky problem here. From the
pharynx there are two passages, beginning with nearly same opening and ending into separate
ones, one to the lungs and one to the stomach. It is important that air goes into one and food into
the other. It is also important that food does not enter the tube through which air goes into the
lungs. The traffic is kept properly channeled by a flap like valve, the epiglottis that protects the tube
to the lungs, arresting entry of food. Observe the following figures and discuss in your class how
epiglottis works while breathing or swallowing.
This valve is partly closed when we swallow food; it deflects food down to the stomach and keeps
it out of the trachea or wind pipe which is the route to the lungs. The epiglottis opens more widely
when we take a breath, and air enters the lungs. Nervous regulation is important in guiding the
functino of epiglottis and passage of food and air. Let us try to do on activity to feel what happens
when we swallow food.
Answer the following questions :
Two passages begin from the pharynx. Where do they end ?
1.
2.
What happens if there is no epiglottis ?
3.
Elders always say not to talk while eating the food. Are they right ? Mention the reason.
4.
Which organ system regulates the functioning of epiglottis ?

Answer:

1. The oral pharynx begins at the back of the mouth cavity and continues down the throat to the epiglottis, a flap of tissue that covers the air passage to the lungs and that channels food to the esophagus. ... Its function is to regulate the passage of air to the lungs and food to the esophagus.

2. If there would be no epiglottis in humans, the food might enter the respiratory tract and result in choking and then death. Secondly, the air we take in might not always enter the lungs and go into the esophagus, causing breathing problems.

3. Explanation: elders always say not to talk while eating food. ... the reason is that while eating if we talk the food enters our wind pipe and we may suffer due to choking. Afterall choking can lead to serious problem. The digestion, respiration and nervous system.

4. The functioning of the epiglottis involves the involuntary actions which are controlled by the brain.

5. Golgi Complex has an essential purpose of directing proteins and lipids to their destination and thus, act as the “traffic police” of the cell.
