When the Gods of rain decided to turn away their faces from Kalahandi,Kalahandi was left devastated. Not a drop of water, not a grain of food, the famine struck Kalahandi and Kalahandi was no less than a desert. The state of Kalahandi could be seen everywhere. In the sunken faces of the children, in their skeleton bodies , in the mothers weeping over the deaths of their newly born who died in starvation, the farmer 's dead bodies who had committed suicide, in the thatched roofs of their houses, everywhere. However, there was also a group of people to look at Kalahandi. The government's neglect of Kalahandi is responsible for making Kalahandi a Kalahandi. The false promises of the politicians and their failed policies made Kalahandi a remote district of Orrisa about which hardly anyone has heard. Questions (i) What are the problems faced by Kalahandi ? (ii) Who is responsible for the current state of Kalahandi? (iii) What does the author compare Kalahandi to?
