According to me, the poet appears to be a professor in college and due to some sad incident or lack of motivation he is no longer interested in the job but he just keeps continues his job.Its a routine job for him to go college teach and then comeback.And finally recieve payments.It happens in all kind of jobs,there has to be some policy to motivate the teachers to enjoy their job.for example increments or family get togethers,picnics,or maybe trips to places or gifts on festivals.there has to be some motivation that is needed for you to stick to any job.
