After about a decade, in 1995, NASA picked her up for for a space programme and in 1997, she became the first Indian-American woman to go to space. She went abroad in her second space shuttle Columbia to study the outer atmosphere of the Sun in January, 2003. On 1st February, 2003, the space shuttle lost contact and crashed, taking away the life of Kalpana Chawla, along with six fellow astronauts.
The first Indian woman to touch the space
Kalpana Chawla is a name known in every household in India. She was the first woman of Indian nationality to travel to space. Kalpana was born in a small town of Haryana called Karnal in 1961. She did schooling at Tagore Bal Niketan in her hometown. She enrolled herself in BE from Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh for further studies and graduated. She pursued her Master's in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas and went ahead to pursue a Ph. D in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado.
She was selected for a space program by NASA and became the first Indian American woman in space. In January 2003, she went aboard her second space shuttle to study the outer atmosphere of the sun. On 1st February 2003, her space shuttle lost communication and later it was discovered that it had crashed, claiming the life of Kalpana with six fellow astronauts.
