Because viruses are neither living nor non- living . When a virus is present in the environment then it is non living but when a virus enters a living organism it turns out to be living.

Viruses have the characteristics of both living and non living things. When it floating in the air or settled on a door nob it is non living as salt and sugar. It can be crystallised and stored in jars for many years. But when it comes in contact with a suitable plant, animal or organism. It shows the characteristics of living organisms and quickly multiply in it and start to affect the cell.

So,Viruses are considered as being a borderline between living and Non living things.
