The above extract is taken from the story, 'the proposal' where Lomov comes to his neighbor’s house to ask for Natalya's hand in marriage but before he could tell her why he had come, they get into an argument about the true owner of the land and they all fight and Lomov leaves while her father reveals why he had come. Natalya hearing this, calls him back but they get into another argument about dog breeds after which Lomov faints and gets up and they both agreed to be married the story ends with the new couple arguing again.
