On the last Wednesday of August each year, the town of Bunol, in eastern Spain,
celebrates Tomato Day. The festival climaxes with thousands of people pelting each
other with tomatoes, in the town square. Tomato pulp drip down faces and walls and
windows and the streets turn into streams of tomato juice.
The festival is believed to have originated in 1945 when during a carnival procession,
a fight broke out and some youths began to pelt another group with tomatoes from a
vegetable stall nearby. It was the peak of tomato season and the stall had just received
several crates of the luscious fruit. It was a temptation for everyone to join in – and
soon everyone did. The youngsters of the town had never enjoyed themselves much.
They commemorated the event with another tomato fight on the anniversary of the
first one .Thereafter it became a yearly event . Thus was born the festival called La
Tomatina ‘The Tomato’.
The town authorities tried to ban the tomato fight several times but in vain. In fact, it
grew in popularity year by year and the people began to come from miles around to
witness and participate in the festival.
By the 1980’s the gaiety and the novelty of La Tomatina was drawing tourists from
all over the world. Today, the very authorities who sought to ban it in its infancy make
arrangements for truckloads of tomatoes to be brought in on Tomato Day.
