Western civilization began in Greece. About 2,500 years ago, a way of life was created in Greece.

People admired this way of life and copied it. Olympics Games, new scientific ideas, philosophy and

democracy were first introduced by the Ancient Greeks.

The ancient Greeks lived in Greece and its islands. They also lived in the country we now know as

Turkey. Besides this, they were also inhabitants of Italy, Sicily, North Africa and even France.

Life for the common man was hard because farmland, water and wood for building shelter were

scarce. Most people lived by farming and fishing, but tried to find alternate methods of livelihood.

They sailed too far off countries to establish trade. By doing so, they took their way of life to these

countries.

However, the Greeks had a rich culture and their lifestyles was copied by the Romans too. The

ancient Greeks had beautiful temples with stone columns and statues. Open air theatres were made

for people to sit and watch play.
