Inside the Minds of Animals
One morning, not long ago, Kanzi invited me for coffee. Sue Savage Rumbaugh joined us. She is a researcher who works
with Kanzi. "We told him that a visitor was coming," Sue said, "He's been excited." Kanzi is a bonobo (ba-no-bo), a close
Cousin of the chimpanzee. He and six other bonobos live at the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines. These bonobos have been
raised from birth by humans who have communicated with them through spoken language and symbols. Kanzi knows more
than 384 words including 'noodles' and 'candy'. He also knows words like 'good' and 'happy'. He can build sentences by
pointing at colourful symbols that stand for words printed on sheets. If all those words have meaning for him, it makes us
wonder about his thoughts and feelings.
Scientists are discovering that humans and apes are not the only animals that can use language, tools, or have feelings. In an
experiment, crows proved adept at bending wire to create a hook They used the hook to fish a basket of food from a plastic
tube. Monkeys practise charity. They share food with other monkeys who are familiar to them. Elephants mourn their dead. If
they find elephant bones, they gently examine them and express sadness.
Scientists have also found that animals that hunt and live together are more intelligent Christine Drea studies hyenas. In an
experiment, food was placed on a platform. To reach the food, the animals needed to pull on a rope together. In less than two
minutes, the hyenas figured out that cooperation was the key to success. "My_jaw dropped," Drea says. We are learning that
animals are surprisingly intelligent This is raising questions about how we treat them.
