Read the passage carefully :
In 1939, the French director, Jean Renoir made one of his best-known films 'Rules of the Game'. Film critics at that time failed to grasp that it was an amazing exception among films made for commercial release. One reason for this lack of proper evaluation could be that the film was screened only for a short while.
The first noticeable thing in 'Rules of the Game' is that it has no single central character. It does not have a plot, but the story does move to a conclusion. What Renoir had done in this film was to expose an unpleasant but true aspect of the wealthy upper-middle class of French society. Vehement protests
were made against the film and consequently, it was removed from the various cinema-halls.
There are many scenes which show two or three characters in a room. At the same time, through an open door, it is possible to see another set of characters in a room, involved in a different event. Since, the camera could not maintain the same distance from both sets of characters, Renoir was faced with a challenge. When shooting indoors, if objects close and far from the camera must remain equally and clearly visible, it is necessary to use a large number of lights. No one used to do it, because it had been unanimously accepted that it was the foreground that was of primary interest and the background was secondary. Renoir was the first to use extra lights and maintain an equal focus on both. Today, such a technique is known as 'deep focus'.
Three years after 'Rules of the Game', a new film appeared in America. It was 'Citizen Kane', directed by Orson Welles. Like Jean Renoir, it showed a huge deviation from the established norms of film making. It has a central character : a typical American, a tycoon. Usually Americans harbour a feeling of reverence towards such characters. Orson Welles tried to expose the real nature of such a character and forced the public to open its eyes to the truth.
