During the harvest festival of Onam in Kerala, boat races, Vallam kal
Malayalam, are held.
Every year during the months of August and September, many boat rac
held in which people take part in large numbers. The boats that are us
are shaped like giant snakes and are painted in bright colours. They ar
as Chundan Vallams. These snake boats are made out of large tree trunks
boats float low in the water and have a long curved stern. The stern is the h
of a ship or boat. The front part or the prow is shaped like open snake jaws.
These Chundan Vallams can hold more than 100 people. The rowers sit into
rows along the length of the boat. They row with all their might. The boat also
has singers who chant and sing to the rhythm of the rowing. Thousands of
people crowd the shore to cheer the huge black boats as they go past. The local
people and visitors from outside enjoy these annual boat races.
