Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
Still, everyone trusted Edison for they knew him to be entirely honest. At last he decided to
employ a book-keeper to keep his accounts in order. It took the man three months to get
through the bills on the books and he declared that they showed three thousand dollars profit
but later he found records in other places and said that they showed a loss of five hundred
dollars. His experience of the difficulties of the book-keeper taught Edison a lesson. For the
future he only counted as profit any money that remained in the bank after he had paid all his
bills.
At one time he was working on about forty-five inventions at the same time; most of them
were about the improvements in the science of telegraphy and the practical result of them was
that people could send telegrams farther distances in less time than before. The telegraph
companies could use one wire where before they had used four or more wires and this enabled
them to save twenty million dollars, and of course people could send telegrams at less expense
Many other inventors began to come to him for help in working out their problems. A very
rough form of typewriter was brought to him to improve and he sat at work to perfect it. Then
were many faults in this machine; the letters were not in line but wandered all over the page
the ink on the ribbons was unevenly spread, and it took longer to type a letter than to write it
But Edison was quite sure that such a machine would be of great use in business and h
continued to experiment with it until he had produced one that was in 'fair working order. Th
Automatic Telegraph Company was the first to make the Edison typewriter, and the compan
used it in its offices. At first, few people learned how to use it for business purposes. It wa
thought to be more polite to write a private letter than to type it. But that machine was th
forerunner of the Remington typewriter that is now known and used all over the world.
