At the end of the Spanish American war, there was immense pressure on the US president William McKinsey to annex Phillipines.   In the quote above US president William McKinsey declared that it was absolutely important to conquer Phillipines because it was the only Catholic country in Asia.  He also believed that annexation of Phillipines would help to spread Christianity and uplift their economic condition.

He was unaware that the Philippines was only Catholic nation in Asia hence he thought that American occupation was necessary to uplift Filipinos, moreover he could not let it go to any other countries that wanted to capture the Philippines
