It was a long night. The mist itself was black and changing, and it seemed to have stifled the
small sounds of the night: the owls cry, the swish of grass or crackle of thicket at an animal’s
passing. There were only long minutes and longer hours. At last, slowly, very slowly, the
blackness turned to grey, and grey lightened to pearl.
