The above quoted lines are from different novels and both have a different style of writing. However, both rely on the same sense i.e the sense of hearing. 

From the line from "Harlem", the writer asks and question which asks the question whether the person can hear an explosion or not. 

While, in the line from "The Weary Blues" the writer describes how the feet thumping on the floor make a noise.
