The Revolt of 1857 was caused basically by the discontentment amongst Indians because of the British rule. Some causes are: Introduction of the Enfield Rifle in the Army(1856) which reportedly had cartiledges coated with animal fats (cows, pigs) and hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu and Muslim soldiers, as they were required to bite of the cartiledges; The British policymakers interfered in the religious practises of the Hindus and faced bitter opposition from them; Rapid de-urbanization and annexation of various states.
