The different rulers of various parts of the subcontinent encouraged agriculture and introduced different systems to extract land revenue from the peasants. The economy of these kingdoms and empires was largely dependent on agriculture. With the British coming to power, the old revenue systems were abandoned and new revenue arrangements were instituted. These systems brought about great changes in the economic and social conditions of the peasants. We will study about these changes in this chapter.
