Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Sushri Uma Bharti introduced Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2017 in Lok Sabha today. Introducing the Bill the Minister called it a “Revolutionary step” towards the resolution of Inter- State River Water Disputes.

Two most recents inter state water disputes are Cauvery water dispute mostly between Tamil nadu, kerela and karnataka and Satluj Yamuna link canal water dispute between Punjab and Haryana

The reasons for increasing disputes are very common :-

1. Water is a finite source.
2. Demand for water has increased hugely.
3. Uses are increasing day by day from household to agriculture to industrial needs.
4. per capita availability has decreased

And mostly there are only one common river between 2 to 5 states, which cant fulfil the needs of all.
