Answer:

Red rust, caused by Puccinia helianthi, is an autoecious rust meaning it produces all its spore stages on sunflower; there are no alternate hosts. Teliospores germinate to produce basidiospores that infect the leaves resulting in the formation of pycnia within which are produced pycniospores and receptive hyphae. After examining the leaves more closely under the dissecting and compound microscopes, we saw that the white patches were actually “rust” pustules containing sporangia. The pathogen, Albugo candida, which causes this disease, white rust, is actually not a true rust as it is not a member of the kingdom Fungi.
