let reema age = x
her mother = 4x

after 5 years
reama age = x + 5
mother's age = 4x +5

ATQ
3(x+5) = 4x + 5
3x +15 = 4x + 5
15 - 5 = 4x - 3x
10 = x

reema age = 10 years
her mother's age  =4 x
                             = 4 * 10
                              = 40 years

The present ages of Reema and her mother are 10 years and 40 years respectively.

Step-by-step Explanation

Given:

  • The age of Reema's mother is four times as that of Reema's age.
  • After five years, the age of Reema's mother will be three times as old as Reema will be then.

To be found:

To find the present ages of Reema and her mother.

Solution:

Let x be the present age of Reema.

Then as per the given problem, it is given that Reema's mother's age is four times that of her.

So, the present age of Reema's mother = 4x

Now, considering the ages of Reema and her mother after five years, we get

Reema's age = x + 5

Reema's mother's age = 4x + 5 ---------(1)

We also know that the Reema's mother's age after five years will be three times as old as Reema's age then.

So, Reema's mother's age after five years = 3(x + 5) ------(2)

Equating (1) and (2), we get

4x + 5 = 3(x + 5) \\  \implies \: 4x + 5  = 3x + 15

Solving, we get

4x - 3x = 15 - 5 \\  \implies \: x = 10

Hence, the present age of Reema = 10 years and Reema's mother = 4(10) = 40 years
